Intonation
intonation second draft from Jesse Freedman on Vimeo.
Intonation is a video project that explores the role of intonation in understanding Jewish comedy and tragedy. The first set of clips is Paul Robeson iconic rendition of "Old Man River" written by the Jewish Musical team Kern and Hammerstein. The second rendering of "Old Man River" is by TV comedy writer Stan Daniels' who recites the lyrics to the song in a deep Yiddish accent.
The second set of clips presents Woody Allen (my voice) reciting the film maker Lars' Von Treir's famous "anti-Semitic" rant at the Cannes Film Festival in which he describes his experience of being raised by a Jewish foster father, feeling tangentially connected but still alienated from Jewish identity and discovering that he biological parents are German.
The second clip uses the script from the opening of Woody Allen's Film "Annie Hall", spoken by Lars Von Trier (My Voice) at the Cannes Film festival.
